Product Reviews: Clarins, Smashbox, and More

As I continue working in the background on what I want this website/blog to be in the future, I thought I'd do a little product review on some empties I've been stockpiling over the past few months. Enjoy! And let me know if you want more posts like this. xLaurenB

1. Clarins “Hydra Quench Cream-Mask”

Rating: 7/10
Repurchase: no*
*Tested on Animals: yes

Review:
I use this 1-2 times a week after exfoliating and using a purifying mask. It feels good and is thick and hydrating BUT I got this from Marshall’s and it has different sized packaging and a different texture than the same product at Shoppers. This means mine could’ve been old/expired.

*I would not repurchase simply based on the fact Clarins does test on animals and overall tends to be a culprit in the “promoting low self-esteem” market. However, I tend to receive a lot of Clarins products free, and I would continue using this product if it were given to me. I just wouldn’t financially support the company.

2.  Korres “Milk Proteins Foaming Cream Cleanser”

Rating: 8/10
Repurchase: possibly
*Tested on Animals: no

Review:
love Korres as a company (find out why on their site) and this cleanser was excellent. It foamed nicely, and didn’t dehydrate my skin. It also foamed up perfectly with my Clarisonic. However, I did find it made my clarisonic smell a bit funny if I didn’t clean it after each use (possibly the milk?). I’d consider repurchasing, but for now I’m committed to my Aveda.

3. Bio Beaute “Micellar Cleansing Water”

Rating: 5/10
Repurchase: no
*Tested on Animals: unsure

Review:
There was nothing wrong with this product, but nothing great about it either.

4. La Roche Posay “Toleriane Ultra”

Rating: 4/10
Repurchase: no
*Tested on Animals: yes

Review:
So my bottle broke, which is unfortunate because the new packaging was one of the main selling features for this product; it also made the product very difficult to use. In short, the “pump” function simply stopped working, so I had to use Q Tips to scoop the product ouch (which I hate!) This product is super gentle for sensitive skin but it didn’t really “do” anything special for me in particular. However, if you are super sensitive, and/or struggle with any skin conditions, I do recommend La Roche Posay as a brand.

5. Bioderma “Sensibio H2O Makeup Removing Solution”

Rating: 7/10
Repurchase: no
*Tested on Animals: unsure

Review:
This product does a decent job at removing some makeup, but doesn’t remove stubborn makeup, and I found you had to use a lot of it. I use it to cleanse makeup brushes now. I may repurchase this product for my brushes, but I wouldn’t repurchase it as a makeup remover.

6. Lancôme “Hypnôse Drama Mascara”

Rating: 3/10
Repurchase: no
*Tested on Animals: yes

Review:
I dislike Lancôme as a company across the board and this was mediocre mascara, anyways, so I would not repurchase it.

7. Smashbox “Double Exposure Mascara”

Rating: 7/10
Repurchase: yes
*Tested on Animals: no

Review:
This mascara was a bit difficult to work with on my small eyes but I love Smashbox and it was a decent mascara so I would consider repurchasing.

8.  The Body Shop “All in One Face Base”

Rating: 7/10
Repurchase: no
*Tested on Animals: no

Review:
I really like the consistency and colour range of this product. The lasting power isn’t great, though, and I’m not a big “powder foundation” girl, so I wouldn’t repurchase myself; however, I would recommend it to others.

9. RoC “Enydrial Repairing Lip Care”

Rating: 9/10
Repurchase: yes*
*Tested on Animals: no

Review:

By far my favourite lip balm! I keep them everywhere. Great for men, too, as it has no colour or scent and the packaging is gender neutral.

*I typically will not repurchase a product once I discover the company is not cruelty free; however, this product is so far incomparable to anything else. As soon as I find a dupe, though, I will switch over (suggestions?)

10. Maybelline “Define-a-Brow Eyebrow Pencil”

Rating: 9/10
Repurchase: possibly*
*Tested on Animals: no

Review:

This pencil is great! Great shade and texture and doesn’t budge even when it gets wet. It doesn’t look “pencilled in” either.

*Again, I typically will not repurchase a product once I discover the company is not cruelty free; so I will be on the hunt for a replacement. Any suggestions?

11. Smashbox “Photo Finish Hydrating Foundation Primer”

Rating: 10/10
Repurchase: possibly*
*Tested on Animals: no

Review:

This is a holy grail product right here! 10/10 and NOT tested on animals. Smashbox is my favourite makeup company, and I use this product daily. It works well under foundation (especially in those areas prone to dehydration). I also use it to thin out my foundation/concealer when I want lighter coverage. Love it!

*Note regarding Animal Testing Rank: I currently use the PETA Database Search, which defines “Cruelty Free” companies as the following: “Have signed PETA’s statement of assurance or submitted a statement verifying that neither they nor their ingredient suppliers conduct, commission, or pay for any tests on animals for ingredients, formulations, or finished products.” Currently, this database is the best reference I could find as a “one stop” for reviewing products. However, if in the future I find something better, or this database’s legitimacy is compromised, I will be finding a replacement. Please note: I respect each individual’s right to care or not to care whether a product is cruelty free; therefore, I do not allow testing practices to influence my “1-10” scale rating.
