The world is a lot right now, and one thing that has always helped me get through is music. These songs are my go-to songs for when anxiety, self-doubt, depression, or hopelessness kicks in. Before I get to the songs, I want to offer a quick clarification: By “Pick me Up Songs” the intention is not to gloss over or ignore my feelings. These are not “happy songs for when you’re feeling sad”; these are songs that help me connect with my feelings and process them. They are also songs that offer reminders of hope and inner strength.
I encourage you to make a playlist of songs that help you process negative feelings and remind you that you have the strength and hope to get through.
Without further adieu, here are my top 10 pick me up songs for bad days (in no particular order):
Alive by Sia
I found solace in the strangest place
Sia “Alive”
Way in the back of my mind
I saw my life in a stranger’s face
And it was mine
I had a one-way ticket to a place where all the demons go
Where the wind don’t change
And nothing in the ground can ever grow
No hope, just lies
And you’re taught to cry into your pillow
But I survived
I’m still breathing, I’m still breathing
I’m still breathing, I’m still breathing
I’m alive
The Lion by Scott Helman
But you weren’t there, you showed your teeth
Scott Helman “The Lion”
And there was Nothing between us but the will in me
I know,
You’re always coming to feed,
I heard roars
Rumbling through the city, and I got that feeling
I’m alone, and I know
Can’t save him if he wants to fight, oh Lord
When I heard him growling, and I dropped there kneeling
It’s not the end, we gotta stand
‘Cause the lion’s just around the bend
I Believe by Christina Perri
I believe that tomorrow is stronger than yesterday
Christina Perri “I Believe”
And I believe that your head is the only thing in your way
I wish that you could see your scars turn into beauty
I believe that today it’s okay to be not okay
Hold on, hold on
‘Cause I have been where you are before
And I have felt the pain of losing who you are
And I have died so many times, but I am still alive
This is not the end of me, this is the beginning
Concrete Girl by Switchfoot
Nothing to run from
Switchfoot “Concrete Girl”
Is worse than something
And all your fears
Of nothing
And they’re swimming
Around again, again
And they’re swimming
Around the concrete girl
Concrete girl
Don’t fall down
In this broken world
Around you
The Valley by Danny Leggett
Losing yourself is no defeat
Danny Leggett “The Valley’
Your broken will can set you free
You’re not alone on this dark day
Sharing your words will be your strength
In this valley I will fly again
In this valley I will rise again
Rival by Ruelle
The tide is high, it’s sink or swim
Ruelle “Rival”
My only rival is within
Giants calling round the bend
My only rival is within
I won’t let my demons win
My only rival is within
I will fight through thick and thin
My only rival is within
Wildfire by SYML
In good time, you’ll come to know
SYML “Wildfire”
When you release, when you let go
You can find yourself where you belong
You’re not a curse, you’re not too much
You are needed here, you are enough
And nothing’s gonna hold you down for long
Sometimes we break so beautiful
And you know you’re not the only one
Bird Set Free by Sia
But there’s a scream inside that we all try to hide
Sia “Bird Set Free”
We hold on so tight, we cannot deny
Eats us alive, oh it eats us alive, oh
Yes, there’s a scream inside that we all try to hide
We hold on so tight, but I don’t wanna die, no
I don’t wanna die, I don’t wanna die, yeah
And I don’t care if I sing off key
I find myself in my melodies
I sing for love, I sing for me
I shout it out like a bird set free
No, I don’t care if I sing off key
I find myself in my melodies
I sing for love, I sing for me
I’ll shout it out like a bird set free
Quasimodo by Lifehouse
There goes my pain
Lifehouse “Quasimodo”
There goes my chains
Did you see them falling
Because this feeling
There has no meaning
There goes the world
Off of my shoulders
There goes the world
Off of my back
Brave by Riley Pearce
Are you lost, because I am too
Riley Pearce “Brave”
Directions mean nothing in the dark when you don’t know where you stand
The maps gone, so are our footprints too
To get home now will take something that I’m not sure that I have left
I’m trying, I’m just trying to be brave
