My 5 Favourite Intuitive Eating Books

Happy New Year! 1) I can’t believe it’s taken until January 19th for me to write the first post of the year 2) I can’t believe it’s January 19th.

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas/New Years and that you’re ready to take on another year with gusto!

Apparently 2015 is the year of reading. Or at least according to most of the people I talk to. Even I divided my bookshelf by “read” and “to read” and realized I’m at about 50/50. Eeek!

So to make things easier for those who want to hop on board the reading bandwagon, and to make things much worse for those who are already on it, I present to you…

My favourite Intuitive Eating Books

1. “Intuitive Eating” by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch

This one sort of goes without saying. It has a workbook format, but is an easy and enjoyable read. A definitely must for anyone who is looking to live the IE lifestyle–after all, not only did these women write the book on it, these women are the founders!

2. “Women, Food, and God” by Geneen Roth

This was the first book I read by Geneen Roth (recommended by my therapist when I was recovering from an eating disorder) and after this one I was hooked. A great read on mindfulness and mindful eating. Also an easy recommendation to any friend who may be struggling with food, self-image, or roller-coaster dieting.

3. “Breaking Free from Emotional Eating” by Geneen Roth

This book is pretty self-explanatory based on the title. My second favourite GR book, this book dives into emotional eating and healing our wounds while also changing our habits.

4. “When Food is Love” by Geneen Roth

A look at the link between love and acceptance and our relationship with food and ourselves.

5. “Feeding the Hungry Heart” by Geneen Roth

Another by Geneen Roth. This book tells stories of others and their journeys to self-acceptance and healthy relationships with food. Another great read!


1. “Travelling Mercies” by Anne Lamott

Anne Lamott is actually the person who first told me about Intuitive Eating. Well, she didn’t literally tell me, but as those of you who have read Anne will know, when reading one of her books it feels as though she’s sitting on the couch next to you sharing her life’s secrets. Anyways, the majority of the book is not about IE specifically; however, she does mention her journey through and out of an Eating Disorder and (referencing Geneen Roth) how mindfulness helped her through. This is a wonderful book and one of my all-time favourites (and my favourite by Anne).

2. “The Gifts of Imperfection” by Brene Brown

If you haven’t heard of Brene Brown then I recommend you stop whatever you are doing (which I suppose is reading this blog) and google her. Watch her TED talks, read her articles, and buy her books. She is amazing. Learn to be gentle with yourself. To be gracious and forgiving. To embrace who you are, and to thrive in the acceptance of your imperfections.
